voodoohowyacall: Black Widow Master Post -...

Black Widow Master Post - Colorized!

Photographer: A. Stevens - http://ift.tt/1Lnk0As

MUA: Rachel - http://ift.tt/1Qvnhpt

So, this shoot was plagued with issues. Nothing to do with the photographer or the MUA; it was just an odd collection of jinxed events:

1. The belt I made for the costume broke / I discovered that the spray paint bled all over the vinyl of the suit -

2. A light fell on my foot (ooowwwwwww) -

3. My good luck charm’s chain broke (and I’ve yet to replace it).

But, you know what they say: bad things come in threes. Best part is, you’d never know the issues by the end results!

For my take on Natasha, I’d originally wanted to do more of a “typical” cosplay shoot - the idea was a dance studio with bright natural lighting to bring out the contrast between the darkness of the suit. And, you know, ballet.

As finding a location became an issue, I went back to the drawing board on this one, and thought back to the historical context in which Widow was actually introduced. She’s a classic femme fatale, a combination of Cold War fear mongering and the 1960s It Girl Bridgette Bardot (take a look at her original beehive red hair and tell me otherwise. I dare you.) With that in mind, I decided that I wanted more a film noir take to her, with the dirty / sepia toned grit that you get from old polaroids. I looked at a lot of publicity photos from MGM’s heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, and did my best to channel Eartha Kitt, Veronica  Lake, and Lauren Bacall.

Of course, the success in which I reached those goals is up to the viewer. I knew at the end of the day that I didn’t want an overtly pin-up Natasha - part of cosplaying is playing to your own strengths to bring a character to life (I think) - and while it’s clear I’m no super assassin produced by the KGB, I wanted to play the strengths that I have in photography (and my general “intimidating” persona) to their upmost.

I have to say, out of the set, the bottom one is my absolute favorite.
